Work continues to effectuate a shopping center in the NELCDC's area of focus. Consumer expenditures have been analyzed and used as an identifier for business recruitment. The NELCDC is currently seeking potential tenants for the shopping center.
Preliminary drawings, a site plan and costs projections have been completed by G. Greenstreet, Inc. Simultaneously, grant writing continues to be done to seek funding from additional sources to finance a portion of the center. Additional sources such as banking institutions are also being pursued.
The shopping center will be a tremendous economic boost for the area. The center is expected to create an estimated 31 -35 jobs for residents in the enterprise zone. Local jobs will help reduce the area's unemployment rate and mitigate the effects of spatial mismatch that is often a barrier to employment. This economic engine will be a viable way for east Lubbock to build wealth and investment so that additional development can follow.
